We saw The Counterfeiters (Die Fälscher) at the lovely Crest Cinema, our local second-run cinema. It was the last chance, since the run ended tonight. Hey, $3 for a good movie, that’s hard to argue with.
I liked the cast, the writing, the directing, the editing, and the cinematography. I was a little lukewarm about the music; I understand the intent to create a surreal contrast, but it jarred me out of some scenes. My favourite image was one where the mattress has been pulled from a bunk bed and the main character is seen through the bed’s springs, which look like barbed wire. That was a great shot, a little visual epigram about a group of relatively well-treated concentration camp prisoners who are still prisoners nonetheless.
