Continuing on shows we tried watching recently:

Rome: The birth of the Roman Empire (and the death of the Republic); starts shortly before Julius Caesar declares himself Imperator. Wonderful topic, I was very much looking forward to this show after hearing so much about it. We watched the first few episodes and didn’t like it at all. For one thing, Rome itself felt tiny, not the metropolis it was. It looks like we keep seing the same 50 by-standers over and over again. I hated the liberties taken with the time line and distances. I hated the sex-and-drugs-and-rock’n’roll approach. I wasn’t hot about the casting. nailed it when he said “It’s Deadwood in 52 BC.”

Raines: After his partner is shot, a detective who is known as an excellent profiler starts visualizing dead victims as personas he can interact with. We watched a couple of episodes, and were not impressed. It was pretty run-of-the-mill, the plots were not well designed, and the dialog was mostly bland.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: A teenager is chosen as the new Slayer; with her friends, she must battle vampires and other supernatural enemies. A few years ago we borrowed and watched the entire first season, primarily because we had like Firefly so much (both were produced by Joss Whedon). We were not enthusiastic and never watched the rest. With the advent of Hulu, ew decided to give it another look and start on Season 2… We made it about 20 minutes into the first episode. I really don’t care about any of the characters, least of all Buffy. I also don’t think the actors are particularly good.
