and I finally went to see “Burn After Reading” on the big screen yesterday night. We really enjoyed it; this belongs to the Fargo category of Coen brothers movies, not the O Brother, Where Art Thou? or The Big Lebowski category. It’s darkly funny, cruel, bizarre, and death is a brutal, shocking (yet frequent) event, not the forgettable choreographed final swoon of most Hollywood movies.
As usual, the Coens work with some of their favourite cast of actors, bringing us wonderful performances from George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins, David Rasche, and J.K. Simmons. In fact, I thought this was the best work I’d seen from Brad Pitt.
I freely admit that the movie is not for everyone but for my part I absolutely love the deadpan humour, the absurdity, and the care and attention to detail. Oh, and as in other Coen brothers movies as well, excellent use of the soundtrack.
